Marc White, Research Advisor

Marc White is the executive director of the Canadian Institute for the Relief of Pain and Disability (CIRPD), a charity he established in 1985 with [the Late] Dr. John McM. Mennell, a former medical consultant to the three armed forces in the United States. The mission of CIRPD is to prevent and reduce pain, pain-related suffering and disability through the translation of high quality research to improve the training of health professionals, support public education and reduce the gap between research and practice. Dr. White is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia. His academic research activities are focused on primary care renewal, knowledge translation and disability prevention. His award winning doctoral research was cross-disciplinary (Faculty of Education and Faculty of Medicine) investigating best practices in planning, implementing and evaluating continuing medical education. During 2005 – 2008 Marc held a three year appointment as Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Department of Rheumatology, Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. His research funded by the Arthritis Foundation brought together primary care organizations, rheumatology associations, consumer health organizations and government agencies in the US and Canada to create a roadmap to improve the continuum of care for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Marc suffers from Inflammatory Osteoarthritis and has had chronic pain for many years following two motor vehicle collisions. He is a strong advocate for improvements in safety standards, occupational health and safety regulations and organizational/ government policies to prevent unnecessary injuries, pain and disability. Dr. White will serve as CPC’s Research Advisor providing assistance with reviewing grant proposals and updates on current research on CPC’s website.
