      Referral Protocols:

      Individuals who are struggling with chronic pain and who have access to private funding (ex. WSIB, auto insurance, Veteran’s Affairs) are appropriate for referral. This program is not OHIP funded.

      Referrals are accepted from family physicians, specialists, case managers, lawyers as well as insurance representatives.

      Each client will participate in our Multi-disciplinary team assessment to determine if they are ready for program involvement as well as to determine their goals.

      Average Wait Times:

      Each client with funding approval will be assessed by our Multi-disciplinary team. If the client is approved to participate in the full program, they will be informed of the next group start date which is typically within two months.

      Services Available:

      The Chronic Pain Management program is six weeks in length, made up of educational and functional group sessions (4 – 5 participants). Group leaders include our Physician, Pharmacist, Occupational Therapist, Recreation Therapist, Psychometrist, Physiotherapist and Clinical Dietician. The program is designed to help clients improve their ability to manage pain and increase their function by assisting them to:

      • Set goals and start a gradual return to functional activity
      • Receive education about chronic pain and learn coping strategies to deal with it
      • Learn to control the pain and not let the pain control them
      • Understand the effects and benefits of exercise
      • Learn how activity can help to reduce pain levels
      • Learn how to avoid pain spikes
      • Learn about appropriate office and home set-up (ergonomics)
      • Learn relaxation techniques and pain management methods
      • Learn effective problem-solving skills
      • Improve communication skills and reduce negative self-talk
      • Learn about medications and their effects
      • Understand the role of healthy eating and healthy living

      Should the client require extra help to move forward in their rehabilitation, individualized therapy as well as a Hydrotherapy (pool) service is available.
