Janice Sumpton RPh., BSc.Phm.

Janice has practiced as a hospital pharmacist in a teaching hospital for over 25 years. Her responsibilities have varied including adult medicine pharmacist, pharmacy manager, drug information and research pharmacist and most extensively as a pediatric pharmacist in a multitude of pediatric specialties.
Her role includes teaching pharmacist residents and students and other health disciplines including nursing and medicine on a day to day basis. Janice has worked in the past as a part-time pharmacist in large chain and independent drug stores.

On a personal level, Janice has had numerous surgeries since age 10 and is very aware of post-op pain and the rehabilitation process. Janice has suffered with chronic low back pain since the late 1970s, and neuropathic back pain since 1998.

Janice has experienced severe chronic pain, poor balance and fatigue. Over the course of 7 years, she saw 10 different specialist doctors, had numerous scans and invasive procedures with the frustration of no diagnosis. Janice was then diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Since that time she has made it her mission to learn as much as possible about chronic pain and fibromyalgia. Her goal is to pass on this knowledge to health professionals and others with pain.

To increase awareness and advocate for pain Janice is a fibromyalgia support group leader and won a scholarship in 2007 from the National Fibromyalgia Association in the United States to attend a workshop to become a Member of the International Leaders Against Pain Coalition. Janice has published articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, and web sites on the topic of pain. She has given a number of lectures to health professionals, and learning sessions to her support group members.

Janice lives with pain on a daily basis while raising two teenagers with her supportive husband and loving dog. She enjoys quiet time with her family. She is an avid knitter and gardener.
